Help protect your accounts from fraudsters by taking a few simple steps

In honor of cybersecurity month, we’re reaching out to inform you about ways to help safeguard your online accounts from fraudsters. We know that the idea of someone getting a hold of your money is unpleasant. The good news is that there are simple steps you can take to protect your accounts.

Install reputable antivirus software on your devices and be sure to enable automatic updates. This prevents fraudsters from using malware installed via phishing emails or other methods to steal your usernames and passwords or to remotely access your computer.

Always use unique usernames and passwords for each of your accounts. Fraudsters purchase compromised login details from the dark web and test them on various websites to find people who reuse credentials for multiple accounts.

Be aware of social engineering scams. Fraudsters will sometimes pretend to be IT or security personnel from well-known companies and request remote access to your computer or ask you to disclose a password under the guise of fixing some non-existent issue on your device. Unless you have initiated contact with someone, do not grant access or give them your passwords.

Enroll in two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Fidelity account and your email and mobile service provider accounts. 2FA acts as an extra hurdle for fraudsters, even if they find out your username and password.

Add extra security offered by your mobile service provider. Many mobile phone carriers offer features to prevent fraudsters from porting your phone number to a new device and attempting to use your phone number to access account information.

Happy New Year 2023

Happy New Year 2023- May this be all of our best years ever

Per our tradition, although SoundBroker.com will continue to function, our office will be closing on 23 Dec and reopening on Monday, 3 January 2022. During that period, email and telephone responses will be extremely limited.

This is the 25th consecutive year that I have had the opportunity to wish you a very happy and healthy holiday season.

I could not have survived all of these years without all of the thousands of people believing and trusting in me to provide them and you with the ultimate in service which I have provided. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

This year I turned 71 and I continue to love what I do, and as you continue to support SoundBroker, I will be around for many years to come.

Internet Fraud, What is a honest man to do? Part 2

Follow up to Fraud Alert June 18, 2015:

Frustrated and hopeless are the two words that come to mind when trying to abort these crooks from committing the crime they are attempting.

1) I called GoDaddy whose is the registrar of the crooks domain. Spoke to someone who although tried to be helpful fell quite short of being helpful. He did give me an email address to send my complaint.  “abuse@godaddy.com”.  This was the email that I sent them and below is their response:

I have been notified that someone is pretending to be me and is attempting to commit fraud using my name and a similar email address.   My domain is SoundBroker.com and they are using SoundBrokerinc.com  They have my address, and federal tax and my duns number.   I have attached an email that I just received from someone that was calling me that received the email.   Please investigate this and shut these crooks down ASAP before they steal money from some unsuspecting victim.    Please confirm receipt of this email.

GoDaddy’s Response:

Snap314

I followed their instructions and emailed the IC3-  FYI: Their form is long and asks for too much information as it is totally generic.  I clicked submit and this is the splash screen that appeared:

Snap315

Almost immediately I received this email:

Thank you for filing a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

This is the only reply you will receive from the IC3.  Because we receive thousands of complaints per week, we cannot reply to every complaint received or to every request for updates.

However, once we forward your complaint to investigators in the field, they may contact you for further information.   Consequently, it is important that you maintain any evidence you have relating to your complaint. Evidence can include canceled checks, credit card receipts, phone bills, mailing envelopes, mail receipts, printed copies of websites, copies of emails, or similar items.

If you wish to view, download, or add information to your complaint, go to http://complaint.ic3.gov/update and log in with the following:

Complaint Id: Ixxxxxx  –  Password: xxxxxx

Fraud Alert

I have been notified that someone is pretending to be me and is attempting to commit fraud using my name and a similar email address.  They have my address, and federal tax and my duns number.  They are using a different phone and fax number.  My domain is SoundBroker.com and they are using soundbrokerinc.com

I have already contacted GoDaddy who is the registrar of the fraudulent domain in hopes to shut them down immediately.

The subject of the email is: Switches Cisco WS-C2960X-24PS-L

The body of the email states the following (I have removed my pertinent contact information)——:

Good Afternoon,

Price quote needed for 24 units of CISCO CATALYST 2960-X 24 PORT POE+ 4 SFP LAN BASE Mfg. Part: WS-C2960X-24PS-L

We look forward to working with you!

——- End of text———–

Ironically yesterday I received a fraudulent request for purchase and here are the steps that I took and what I recommend to prevent fraud when getting an unrequest order.

Type the legitimate name of the company into your browser and use the contact information on the web site to call the organization that is supposedly placed the order.  NEVER use the information from the email to verify if the order is legit.

I highly recommend you be very diligent in your research before trusting and unsolicited request for purchase.

If you have any ideas to shut these crooks down and put them in jail where they belong, please leave me your thoughts in the comments.

SoundBroker.org – A Change for the Best is Almost Here

History has a way of repeating itself and if something was done right and it works then you should keep doing it, or as I like to say “if it is not broken don’t fix it”. If that is the case, then if it is broken and history has shown how do do it right, then only a fool will keep doing the same thing the same way and expect a different result.

Thanks to Morris Lyda’s amazing ability to convince me into doing something that I was meant to do, I started selling professional used gear for Disney in August 1997. I had not idea what I was doing, but Morris was convinced that I was the only salesman that could accomplish what he needed. I sold everything that he needed for me to sell to accomplish what he needed accomplished.

Then once again, in March of 1998 Michael McDonald, convinced David Bell and Mark Terry that I could do for JBL what I did for Disney which was to sell their warehouse of discontinued inventory. I did that too. As a matter of fact, everything that I did, I did despite myself. I believe that because I loved what I was doing, the universe took me along for a thrilling ride that is still going strong. I was the first one to use the Internet to market used gear and was the first online broker. All of the rest, came along after SoundBroker.com

There is not a day that goes by that I am not humbled by the success that I have experienced, I feel blessed and lucky. I believe that the key to my success is to be honest, likeable, and trustworthy. To give service, and to make sure that the buyer, the seller, and myself at the end of the transaction are winners.

I have seen our industry evolve from an analog one to a digital one and I have seen the huge profits that once were possible in leasing and renting dwindle to making it more difficult to earn a living. It is with all of the above thoughts in mind that I have decide to introduce a new membership service that will change the world into a better and more profitable place.

I am proud to announce today for your approval, SoundBroker.org a revoultionary new service organization for everyone that is involved in one way or another with profession production service and the support industry. An organization that everyone that participates is a winner.

Logo ORG in prog black bkgd

I know that developing SoundBroker.org is a huge undertaking, but a necessary one if the industry that I love and created can survive. I believe in my heart and soul that SoundBroker.org is and idea whose time has come. And as we all know, no idea is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.

I also know that SoundBroker.org is going to be a work in progress and that for it to be successful I need the support and nurturing of everyone that has ever benefited from SoundBroker.com.

In the next few weeks, I will be releasing more information encouraging your support. Stay tuned…………..

Jury Duty

Today is February 23, 2015 and it is now 10:50 AM in the morning. I am in my car now and I am heading to my office from jury duty.

2015-02-23 09.05.532015-02-23 10.24.05

What an experience!

The best part of the whole experience, is that it’s now over at least it’s over for at least 18 months to three years. That’s the period of time that they are a lot for you to get out of the jury pool before they could put you back into the jury pool.

It doesn’t normally rain in Las Vegas, but on the way to jury duty this morning it was raining. And of course seeing it doesn’t rain very much when it does rain, people don’t know how to drive in the rain. So needless to say, it was a total drag driving to the courthouse which is in downtown Las Vegas. When I did arrive at the parking structure, I found it was 3 city blocks away from the courthouse. A nice walk on a cold and rainy day.

When I arrived at the courthouse, I was not surprised that they had security, what I was surprised by is how much security that you have to through before you can enter the building. After taking off, all my outer wear, belt, watch, shoes, and everything in your pockets, you can go through the metal detector.

Then was the journey to the third floor jury room. Another surprise, there must have been over a thousand and change people as when they started to call numbers, they started at 0001 and my number was 0191 and there were still a sea of people still waiting to be called. Let me put it is way, there were not enough chairs to go around and until the first batch of people were called to go to the courtroom, there was not enough chairs for me to sit down. When I finally did get a chair, I ended up sitting next to a guy that had badge number 986.

At around 9:30 AM it was my turn to get called and we were instructed to line up numerically by badge number and report to the 11th floor and line up outside the courtroom 11B. By the way at this time all cell phones and communication to the outside world was shut off.

One thing I will compliment them on is that the Marshals have it down to a science, including injecting a little humor, by asking “By show if hands, who wanted to be here.” They know you don’t want to be there. I cannot imagine anyone with a pulse that would want to be there. I know that I didn’t, although I wanted to do my civic duty, I was torn.

When we walked into the courtroom, the room was already filled with quite a few court officials, the Judge, the court reporter, the defendant and all their lawyers and the plaintiff and her lawyer. What struck me as interesting, is that everyone was standing and remained standing until all 100 of us were seated.

The Judge open the mic and began by introducing himself, that this was a Civil trial between the Plaintiff a worker for the Paris Hotel and defendant The Paris Hotel sense the difference in lawyer count. Then the judge said that this case would take approximately 3 days of jury time and if there was anyone that could not be there for 3 days, they should raise their hands and state the reason why they show be excused. One guy got out because he had a paid airfare ticket (of course he needed to fax a copy of it to the judge as proof) the rest, whatever their stories were, the judge didn’t buy it. Needless to say, I did have my hand raised. When the guy who was called before me, told the judge what I was going to say.
What he told the judge was that he is a small business owner and that being here for 3 days would be an unbearable hardship. The judge was not kind to this guy. He told him flat out that everyone in this room was under hardship to be there and he was ordered to sit down and wait for the lawyers to question him to see if he would be picked for the jury. I was next.

After I announced my name and badge number, I promoted SoundBroker.com and that I too was a small businessman, however (and here is the rub) I went on to say that I sell equipment to a lot of the hotels on strip and I had recently done a job a large job with Bally’s.

The judge was not going to have any of this from me and he said to me just because you did a sale with Bally’s has nothing to do with the Paris Hotel and please sit down and the lawyers will get to you in time. I thought that was it for me when all of sudden the Paris Hotel’s lawyer, stood up and said the following “ Your Honor, The Paris Hotel is owned by Caesar’s Entertainment and they own also own Bally’s”. With that the judge turned to the Plaintiff’s lawyer and asked him if that would be a problem for him.

The Plaintiff’s lawyer rose and said the following “ Your Honor, I appreciate the honesty of the prospective juror and I would prefer not to have him on this jury.”

With that the judge turned to me and said “Your dismissed.”

The Marshall approached me and told me to return down to the 3rd floor jury pool and report to the clerk for reassignment. I left the courtroom without looking back and returned to the 3rd floor and went up to the clerk and told her what had happened expecting to be returned to the jury pool, but there was so many people still sitting in the room, that she asked for my badge, stamped the reverse side and said, “You can go. Thank you for your time today.”

2015-02-23 10.23.24

All in all not too bad of an experience, but one that I am not looking forward to repeating.

Another Milestone

It was 16 years ago on September 4th, 1998 that I registered the name SoundBroker.com – blows my mind. Where did the time go? All I know is that I am very thankful to everyone that has supported my efforts and have assisted me in my career path. Thank you.

Celebrating Going on 17 Years

I read somewhere that most people on their deathbed, talk about what they could have done or should have done with their lives. I also heard that no one says, I wish I put in more time at the office.

We all make choices and then we have to live with the outcome of those choices. In my opinion, the main goal of life is enjoy yourself whenever possible. Having said that, I will say, it is better to be happy doing nothing than to be unhappy and do everything.

I have some friends that are fortunate from the stand point that the work-a-day world that most of the rest of us live in that forces us to make work choices so that we can be in the place to make the rest of the choices that you make every day without having to work. For example, one of my hobbies is taking naps. That is a hobby that that I cannot accomplish while I am at work. However, my friends that are not at work, find plenty of time to practice their hobbies and are quite proficient at taking naps.

I once heard the theory of life life described as the Law of Substitution. Simply stated, it does not matter how much time or money you have, you cannot do everything at the same time. You cannot take a walk in the forrest and search for metals at the beach, you cannot make love and play tennis, you cannot eat and scuba dive, you cannot type and drive a car. I think you get the idea. Likewise no matter how much money you have you cannot buy everything that is available to buy, so you have to make choices. Hopefully the choices you make will be the right choices and the ones that will reward you the way you want to be rewarded.

I feel extremely fortunate that my work life provides me most of the pleasures I desire, and it gives me the free time to do most of what I want to do and most importantly satisfies my need to strive for a worthwhile goal and assisting good people which in turn makes me a living from doing my job. In short, I really enjoy what I do so much so, that it is almost like not working. The only reason it must be called work is that I need to continue doing my job during the times I would prefer to be sleeping (and as of this writing, I have not been able to sleep on the job).

It is with humble heart that I wish to thank each and everyone of the people that allowed me to assist them which in turn has allowed me the chance to live a most enjoyable life.

Here is to the next 17 years,

All my best,

Jan Landy,
CEO and Founder of soundbroker@gmail.com
